Matte for Spring: Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid
After seeing Maybelline's new Color Sensational Vivid Matte Liquid lip colors in stores and all over YouTube for the last few weeks, I finally snagged a couple for myself. Now, I love a dark matte lip, but with warmer weather right around the corner I've been wanting to lighten things up a bit with some brighter shades. Cue Maybelline's Vivid Matte Liquid - it's a matte finish lip color with the consistency of a liquid lipstick and it comes in 10 bright shades. Jackpot.
I grabbed Electric Pink [left] - a shocking true pink - and Fuchsia Ecstasy [right] - a watermelon pink/red - and tried them out as soon as I got home. Right off the bat, I loved the colors, but I have to say, they aren't what I was expecting. They're very liquid, pretty shiny and the color payoff was a bit lacking. Even after letting the product dry down and blotting, it was still only semi-matte and smudged easily...definitely not what I was hoping for.
BUT - one of the top complaints I hear about matte lipsticks is that they are drying and feel chalky, and this product definitely does not feel dry or chalky. So well done on that, Maybelline! Because of the gloss-like consistency, Vivid Matte Liquid moves with your lips and feels comfortable - soft and a bit moisturizing. While I definitely wouldn't call this a true matte, I think it's a solid option if you want something that wears more comfortably than a traditional matte lipstick, but isn't as shiny as a gloss.
So, yes, the name here is a bit misleading - the product is not that vivid and it's not all that matte, but the range has some fun shades for spring and it's a good stepping stone to a matte lip. I definitely have a few other lipstick loves in similar shades - ahem Nars Schiap - so I don't think these are going to make it into my regular rotation, but I'm not giving up on them just yet!
